BROOKLAND APARTMENTS: WESLEY’S FIRST COMMUNITY IN THE DISTRICT

Nov. 8, 2016 - Wesley has acquired our first property in the District of Columbia! Brookland Place Apartments, near Catholic University and two Metro stations, consists of 80 rental units. The property was acquired in partnership with the tenant association through the District's Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA) regulations. We acquired the property using a loan from the Enterprise Community Loan Fund, Inc., under the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development's Site Acquisition Funding Initiative (SAFI) program, as well as a secondary loan from Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. The acquisition allows us to preserve the community's affordability and provide improved services for residents.

In addition, on November 9, Polly Donaldson, Director of D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development, announced the award of funding through the 2016 Funding Notice and Request for Proposal Process to provide construction/permanent financing for the substantial renovation of Brookland Place Apartments.

The Fallstead at Lewinsville Center Groundbreaking

On September 8, representatives of Wesley Hamel and officials from Fairfax County, the state government, partners, and supporters came together to officially break ground on The Fallstead at Lewinsville Center in McLean, VA. Leading the ceremony was Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s (FCRHA) Commissioner Melissa Jonas, Dranesville District. Speakers included Delegate Rip Sullivan, Virginia House of Delegates; Supervisor John Foust, Dranesville District, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors; President/CEO Shelley Murphy, Wesley Housing; and other Fairfax County officials.

Through a public-private partnership between Wesley Hamel and Fairfax County, the existing site of the 8.66 acre Lewinsville Senior Center will be redeveloped. The original 55-year old building will be replaced with two new buildings. Wesley Hamel will construct the housing component of the project, which includes a total of 82 units of privately operated affordable senior independent housing in The Fallstead at Lewinsville Center. The new units will be operated by Wesley Housing. The second County building will include a senior center, adult day health care center, and two private child daycare centers.

The project will bring nearly four times as many affordable independent-living units to the community for seniors at or below 50 percent of the area median income. It will also nearly double the capacity at the Adult Day Health Care Center and Senior Center and provide state-of-the-art facilities for the child care centers.

The project is expected to be completed in its entirety in the fall of 2018.
